Memories of Oban

As I stand by the shadow of Dunollie

Shades of colour paint the evening sky

As the sun sets down on the Isle of Mull

Like a masterpiece catching the eye

Golden rays reflect off the green leaves

Of the castles once grey covered walls

A time to reflect and reminisce

As nature sets a stage to recall

Like a proud mother guarding her children

The tower watches over the town

Looking out over the beautiful bay

And beyond lovely Kerrera sound

The hustle and bustle of ferries

Plying back and forth with their cargo

Of tourists and hard working people

Keeps the shore workers all on the go

The pier has changed from what I recall

Now no fishing boats queuing to land

No sound of the auctioneers calling

As he tries to increase the demand

The sounds of the seagulls loud cackle

As they circle overhead in the sky

Brings back memories of a time gone past

Which have past in the blink of an eye

The clock perched above the old station

Once a landmark for each one and all

Now discarded in the name of progress

Replaced by a huge dining hall !!

I know things can’t last us forever

But why must they tear beauty down

The old folks must stand and shake their heads

Asking what have they done to our town

These thoughts could go onwards forever

As I try to think back with a sigh

Old memories and stories fleet through my mind

Of proud people in days long gone bye

And now as the sun sets before me

Like a painting set out in the sky

I still dream of the beauties of Oban

They will stay till the day that I die.
